Ollantaytambo, in short

Ollantaytambo, at 2,790 m, is the lowest point of the day and the stop both routes share, at 14:15. You climb the terraces of the fortress-temple up to the Temple of the Sun, then walk a town still lived in on its Inca street plan. Both routes give it one hour with your guide.

It is also where the trains to Machu Picchu leave: either tour can end here at 15:30, for US$1 less.

What you see

Four things to see in Ollantaytambo

The fortress-temple terraces

Wide terraces climb the hillside above the town — the climb that frames the whole visit.

The Temple of the Sun

At the top of the site: large, finely fitted stone blocks, explained by your guide.

The living Inca town

Narrow streets and water channels, still lived in and still following their Inca layout.

The station for Machu Picchu

Trains to Machu Picchu leave from here; finish your day tour in town if you are taking one.

Tips

Make the most of Ollantaytambo

  • Take the climb slowly: the terraces are steep but short.
  • Keep water and a hat for the afternoon sun.
  • Taking the train? Book the Ollantaytambo ending and plan how you carry your luggage.
  • Look down from the top: the town’s Inca street grid is easy to see.
